Aboyne Academy & Glen Tanar win ‘Inspiring Futures’ award

Last weeks’ ‘Northern Star Business Awards’ (Thursday 27 September) at the AECC, saw a success for Aboyne Academy and Glen Tanar, when they scooped the ‘Inspiring Futures’ award. This was in recognition of their ongoing partnership, which seeks to deliver hands-on career inspiration experiences to local school children, through a series of interactive learning days.

The partnership was first initiated, a few years ago, to raise awareness among academy pupils of the wide range of career opportunities available to them, in local sectors such as the Forestry Industry. Latterly, the relationship between the two has expanded to cover the growing tourism sector, with the piloting of a ‘Hospitality & Tourism’ day.

Glen Tanar’s Michael Bruce was extremely proud to receive this joint award.

“It’s fantastic that this unique partnership between Glen Tanar and Aboyne Academy has been recognised in this way. Our recent Hospitality & Tourism day (as well as our previous Forestry days) aimed to show young school leavers an alternative route of investing in themselves and their future careers. It also gives them the opportunity to be involved in developing these vibrant growth industries – right here on their own doorstep.”

Aboyne Academy Depute Head Teacher Michael Foy added:
“We were delighted to build on our already very strong partnership with Glen Tanar in delivering the Hospitality & Tourism day. Working closely with local business partners is a key part of preparing pupils for the world of work. Everyone involved was very positive about the experience. Pupils clearly felt they had a rewarding day, developing their knowledge of career opportunities in their local area, as well as focusing on some key employability skills.”

The pilot event was deemed a resounding success, and now with the prestigious award under their belts, both organisations are keen to retain and develop the relationship, seeking further collaboration on similar events in the future.

8th June 2018

On the 8th June 2018, Mrs Leslie took the large group of Pupil Leaders to Glen Tanar Estate for an activity packed Leadership Day. The group made up of all the Prefects, Senior Prefects, Vice Captains and House Captains from all four houses were involved in tasks which not only helped to improve their team work and communication skills, but also gave them the opportunity to voice their opinions on any changes they wanted to see at Aboyne Academy with regard to the House system, Pupil Council, the school community and pupil leadership in general. On a sunny day in the beautiful grounds of Glen Tanar, the leaders worked together in Houses but also mixed their groups up to work with pupils from other years and from opposing Houses. The day was a great success and in the two terms since then, we have already made some changes as suggested by the Pupil Leaders and look forward to seeing what other ideas they have. A big thank you to Glen Tanar estate for the amazing back drop for the day and also to the Aboyne Co-op for providing the group with a tasty lunch.

21st March 2018

Our pupils had a fantastic experience at Glen Tanar Estate on Wednesday 21 March.  Thirty S4/5/6 pupils attended for a full day of interactive workshops to help them experience a range of jobs in hospitality and wildlife tourism.

One event was a  ‘banqueting challenge’ where they had to set a table for a wedding.  They also received a food demonstration with executive head chef Brian Donaldson from Hilton Grand Vacations using locally sourced produce before receiving a hands-on kitchen experience.

We cannot thank the staff at Glen Tanar enough for giving our pupils such a great opportunity as hospitality and wildlife are a big part of this beautiful area of Scotland.
