Hospitality Apprenticeship North East (HANE) scheme
In collaboration with Opportunities North East (ONE), we are part of the Hospitality Apprenticeship North East (HANE) scheme.
Hotels within Aberdeenshire are supporting this programme to develop and grow talent within the hospitality industry – we currently have 2 apprentices on the scheme.
We are now already looking for new apprentices to start end August/beginning of September – specifically, we are looking for bright, enthusiastic and professional individuals who want to develop a career in hospitality, but do not want to go to down the “traditional” hotelschool/university route.
Good communication, literacy, numeracy and basic IT skills are required – a desire and willingness to learn “hands on” is a great advantage.
The apprentices are supported through an organisation called Training Matters, who coordinate workshops on a monthly or bi-monthly basis for all apprentices in the region to come together and experience a different part of hospitality.
The apprentices also have assignments to complete and they are supervised by a designated mentor. There are also Mentor-Apprentice workshops.
The apprenticeship generally lasts between 18 and 24 months and follows a rotation between departments:
Food & Beverage Rotation – 20 Weeks includes training in WSET (Wine Spirit Education Trust) Level 1
Housekeeping Rotation – 12 Weeks
Kitchen Rotation – 20 weeks
Reception Rotation – 20 Weeks
Masterclasses – Varied with opportunities to visit other partner properties
Pupils are paid during the apprenticeship.

Aboyne Cluster Harvest Lunch (11th October 2018)
Aboyne Cluster celebrated Harvest by preparing a Harvest lunch for elderly residents of Allachburn Home and Bonty Court. 40 pupils from 9 of our cluster primary school were mentored by S2 Home Economics pupils to produce two types of soup, mixed berry crumble and apple pie. Ms Lowe the HE teacher, and the Head Chef from Craigendarroch were in charge of food preparation and two employees from the Fife Arms hotel ensured that a group of the pupils created a beautiful harvest table with appropriate decorations.
One of the guests asked if they could come back every month!
