Health and Wellbeing
Aboyne Academy is committed to promoting health and wellbeing for all our children, young people and staff. Learning in health and wellbeing ensures that children and young people develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, capabilities and attributes which they need for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and in the future.
Health and Wellbeing across Learning
The Health Faculty, Guidance team and PSE curriculum, ensure that pupils experience learning across the health and wellbeing themes of Physical Education, Food and Health, Substance Misuse and Sexual Health and Relationships Education (SHARE).
There are however several aspects of Health and Wellbeing which are embedded across all learning contexts and which are the responsibility of all. Awareness of mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is promoted throughout the year and there are also four established Health Weeks during each session. This opportunity to focus on mental health, emotional health, physical health and social health separately, enables us to work together as a school to raise awareness and reduce stigmas associated with certain aspects of health and wellbeing.
We are committed to establishing open, positive and supportive relationships across the school community where children and young people feel listened to, safe and secure. Embedding this into the school community enables us to create a positive ethos and a climate of respect and trust. Principally, our aim is to enable pupils to establish a pattern of health and wellbeing which will be sustained into adult life. Ultimately this will help them to develop into responsible citizens, successful learners, effective contributors and confident individuals.
Health and Wellbeing Group
The Health and Wellbeing Group consists of several members of staff from across the school community. We meet regularly and have responsibility for planning and evaluating the impact of the four themed health weeks. We also focus on health and wellbeing improvement across learning. The themed health weeks across the school session began in 2013 and are becoming a successful feature in the school calendar. Previous themes have included sleep, emotional literacy, kindness, stress, friendship, inclusion and learning styles.
